“Devdan, Treasure of the Archipelago”: Bali’s Spectacular Showcase on Cultural Diversity
Bali’s Spectacular Showcase on Cultural Diversity.
The show is called Devdan -Treasure of the Archipelago, and is performed regularly at the Nusa Dua Theatre. Formerly known as the Candraloka Amphitheater, The Bali Nusa Dua Theater is most prestigious venue that annually hosts the Nusa Dua Festival, and a number of other events.
Devdan -Treasure of the Archipelago weaves together the wonderful cultural diversity of the Indonesian Archipelago into one spectacular performance. The show is not a musical nor a drama, but is instead, a contemporary acrobatic and dance performance inspired by the diverse cultures that spell Indonesia. The name ‘Devdan’ is derived from Sanskrit, and is short for deva – God and dana meaning gift. Thus , “Devdan, Treasure of the Archipelago” tells about heaven-sent gifts in the form of natural and cultural diversities bestowed upon the people of the Indonesian archipelago that stretches from the island of Sumatra to Papua.
The show features a fusion of Indonesian traditional dance choreographies with modern dance styles, world-class aerial acrobatic actions, dazzling costumes and hi-tech special effects. During the 90-minute performance, the audience will be taken on a magical whirlwind tour of the Indonesian islands from Bali to Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Papua. Aside from featuring distinct dances from many parts of the archipelago, the show also fuses various Indonesian traditional music with the modern beat of hip hop, and traditional costumes with the latest fashion trends.
A number of world-acclaimed artists – both foreign and Indonesian – were behind the creation of the Devdan Show. But despite the involvement of professional artists from abroad in its pre-production, all cast and stage crew are talentedand skilled artists from across Indonesia itself.
The show tells the story of two children who are lost in the forests of Bali and make an astonishing discovery. Together they embark on a magical journey across the vast Archipelago of Indonesia. Along their journey to the islands of Bali, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Papua, the children experience colossal volcanic eruptions, rumbling earthquakes, flowing molten lava, torrential rains, and a series of other exciting adventures.
“Devdan – Treasure of the Archipelago” was featured in Conde Nast Traveller’s January 2012 issue in “Ten Things to Do with Kids in Bali”, and was also ranked No. 1 on Trip Advisor’s Attractions in Nusa Dua.
The show is regularly performed four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 19.00 Central Indonesia Time.
